About
I am interested in consciousness, fascinated by all things metaphysical, and intrigued by the notion of thoughts becoming things. My paintings are not “abstractions of something.” They are processed based. They are evolutions of whatever first marks land on the canvas or the page. They are about trusting my heart to lead the way, to show me, to remind me, that there is a force greater than I am that can organize what begins as chaos into a coherent whole, and that whole will connect me to spirit in a way nothing else can. I am learning to get out of my own way, to listen rather than to tell. I want these paintings to feel inevitable, like the rainbows in an oil spill, or the patterns on a fawn’s back. I trust them to carry the heart of the animals and nature spirits that guide me. I want them to serve as portals into another realm.
Sometimes, in a series, I let the paint emerge on its own terms. The paint is poured without the use of any painting tools-no brushes, sprayers, squeegees, or drawing tools. In a related series, the pours seem to invite a literal presence. The animals and shamanic tools that have served as guides for me along the way are a natural addition, as I continue to question the nature of reality itself. That body of work is contemplative, meditative, as all of my paintings are. I think of the next series more as a walking meditation--more active as I allow more brushes and tools into the process. My intent is still to let the paintings self-form. One mark leads to another intuitively, with no prior plan. Even the black and white series is an extension of the mark making thread, only limiting the palette to black and white. The work reflects my exploration of the unity of heaven and earth. They are all landscapes, really, the landscape within.
